Under Section 17(1) of the Probation of Offenders Act, 1958, the State Government may, with the approval of the Central Government, make rules by notification in the Official Gazette to carry out the purposes of the Act. Such rules may cover appointment, terms, and duties of probation officers, recognition of societies, payment of remuneration, and other prescribed matters; all rules are subject to prior publication and must be laid before the State Legislature.
