The Caspian Sea, though called a sea, is technically the world's largest lake by surface area at approximately 371,000 km². It is a landlocked body of water bordered by Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Azerbaijan. Lake Superior (82,103 km²) is the largest freshwater lake by surface area.
