The Government of India Act 1858 transferred the administration of India from the East India Company to the British Crown. Queen Victoria's Proclamation of November 1, 1858 formally announced this transfer, ending Company rule and beginning direct Crown rule over India.

Sarojini Naidu presided over the Indian National Congress at the Kanpur Session in 1925. She was the first Indian woman to be elected President of the INC, a landmark moment in India's freedom struggle and women's political participation.

Andhra State was carved out of the Madras State on October 1, 1953, following the death of Potti Sriramulu who fasted unto death demanding a separate Telugu-speaking state. It was India's first state formed on a linguistic basis. In 1956, it merged with Telugu-speaking areas of Hyderabad to form Andhra Pradesh.

March 23rd is observed as Shaheed Divas (Martyrs' Day) in India to honour Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru, who were hanged by the British on this day in 1931. The day commemorates their supreme sacrifice for India's independence.
