Volatile means ‘liable to change rapidly’ and volatile memory refers to the memory which looses data rapidly when power to the memory circuit is removed. Thus, it looks after it’s data as long as it is powered. Non-volatile means ‘not volatile’ and non-volatile memory refers to the memory which retains the data even if there is a break in the power supply.
